"Are you sure you’re taking a Master’s degree now?”
Someone asked me this when I was about to enroll for a Master’s degree at the age of 39.
My answer to this person should have been, “Well, I’ll graduate at 41 years old. It’s a fact. But I’ll be 41 anyways.”
Unfortunately, I didn’t respond like that. I felt ashamed of choosing a path. A different one, to reset and start a new career in a new country from scratch.
I’m a Brazilian in Italy, this is also a fact. I thought it would be impossible to start a tiny micro business. I didn’t know what I was going to sell, I didn’t know anything about Italian rules and regulations for small businesses.
But I was certain about one thing. I wanted to change. I wanted to be more than a stay-home mom.
Still, I love my girls, they are everything to me. But I wanted more.
I had a 9-month career break after moving to Italy, and instead of changing my career, I did what I knew was easy for me: I got a job.
Against all odds, without fluency in Italian, no support network, and not knowing anyone in the city. I did it.
But I was miserable at that job.
It was not the boss, not the company, not the environment, not the culture.
It was me.
I didn’t allow myself to try something new. I was scared.
It took me 7 other months to finally take the leap.
And I still don’t know if it will be the last career leap in my life. It’s impossible to know.
Now, I know that when I feel aligned and help others with career-related issues, I’m happy!
Happiness is crucial to materialize dreams.
This is when you start to take inspired action.
When I look back to the past 3-4 years, I see how many wonderful things I have done. I’m grateful for the courage and amazing people supporting my journey.
So, my message today is: time is never going back. What are you waiting for to end your career break?
