“I HAVE NO JOB SEARCH STRATEGY.”

A couple of weeks ago, I coached a senior manager who wanted to relocate to a new country.
To get the conversation started, I asked them what their job search strategies were and how many job interviews they had in the past 30 days.
”Well, I have no job search strategy. Er, hum, no, no, I think I have one. I’m looking for job posts on LinkedIn and applying online. But I haven’t got any interviews so far.”

I looked into their eyes and asked: “If you were job searching in your country, would you be doing that for a senior managerial position at a 150k€ yearly compensation?”
And the answer was “No way. I got all my previous jobs from internal referrals. The thing is that now I don’t know many people in the destination country. I don’t know how to get a referral if I don’t know anyone.”

I know how painful it is to search for a job in a new place where you don’t know many people. It’s overwhelming because the negative self-talk goes on and on for hours, days, weeks, and months.
It’s tough to get rid of the feeling that you’re not enough and that everyone around you seems better than you.
